PARTIAL SNES platformer

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! is a 1996 platformer developed by Rare for the SNES, the third mainline entry in the series. With Donkey and Diddy Kong missing, Dixie Kong sets out with her toddler cousin Kiddy Kong to find them, uncovering a scheme by Baron K. Roolenstein (a disguise of King K. Rool) along the way. The game is set primarily in the Northern Kremisphere and features six main worlds plus a hidden seventh world (Krematoa / the Lost World).

This guide documents the game's main progression and structure; some specific details are still being verified and are noted where relevant.

Controls

Dixie Kong is built around aerial movement, using her ponytail to glide/hover through the air; she carries barrels overhead (open to side attacks) and moves slower than usual while carrying Kiddy Kong. Kiddy Kong is both stronger and heavier than Dixie; he can throw her to higher areas, has a rolling attack, and can skip across water surfaces. He carries barrels in front of his body for protection.

Regions / Worlds

Main worlds and their bosses: Lake Orangatanga (Belcha), Kremwood Forest (Arich), Cotton-Top Cove (Squirt), Mekanos (KAOS), Razor Ridge (Bleak), and Kaos Kore (KAOS Mk. II). Krematoa, a hidden Lost World, is unlocked with Bonus Coins and hosts the endgame confrontation with Baron K. Roolenstein. Animal buddies include Ellie the elephant (water-spray attacks), Enguarde the swordfish, Squawks the parrot (flight), Squitter the spider (web platforms/projectiles), Parry the parallel bird (small aerial helper), Nibbla (a conditional ally), and a purple Squawks/Quawks variant used for carrying barrels.

Progression / Required Objectives

Bear Coins serve as an in-game currency, used to pay for items from the Brothers Bear and to access Swanky's Sideshow bonus game. Bonus Coins are earned by completing Bonus Areas and are required to access levels within Krematoa. One DK Coin is hidden per level; collecting all of them unlocks access to the Gyrocopter, which is needed to reach the game's final challenge area. A broader side quest involves finding hidden Banana Birds across the game, tied to a secondary storyline and additional unlockable content.

Bosses

Belcha — Lake Orangatanga (first world boss). Arich — Kremwood Forest. Squirt — Cotton-Top Cove. KAOS — Mekanos. Bleak — Razor Ridge. KAOS Mk. II — Kaos Kore. Baron K. Roolenstein, revealed to have been secretly controlling KAOS as a puppet throughout the game, is fought at Kastle Kaos, and again in a second encounter aboard the submarine Knautilus in Krematoa after the Lost World's five "cogs" are recovered and returned to Boomer's Bomb Shelter.
