Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country is a 1994 platformer developed by Rare for the SNES. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong must recover the Kongs' stolen banana hoard from King K. Rool and his Kremling army. The game is a side-scrolling platformer built around switching between the two playable Kongs (only one is active on-screen at a time; the other follows and can be tagged in) and riding animal buddies through specialized level segments.

This guide documents the game's main progression and structure; some specific details are still being verified and are noted where relevant.
Controls
Donkey Kong is the stronger, slower Kong; he has a unique "Hand Slap" ground-pound move that uncovers hidden items and can defeat certain tougher enemies, and he throws barrels farther but holds them overhead (leaving him open to attack from the side he's not facing). Diddy Kong trades power for speed and agility; he carries barrels defensively in front of his body and uses a cartwheel attack instead of Donkey Kong's roll.
Regions / Worlds
The game has six main worlds, each ending in a boss fight, followed by a seventh world for the final confrontation: 1. Kongo Jungle — boss: Very Gnawty 2. Monkey Mines — boss: Master Necky 3. Vine Valley — boss: Queen B. 4. Gorilla Glacier — boss: Really Gnawty 5. Kremkroc Industries, Inc. — boss: Dumb Drum 6. Chimp Caverns — boss: Master Necky Snr. 7. Gang-Plank Galleon — boss: King K. Rool (final boss) Five animal buddies appear across the levels: Rambi the rhino (charges through enemies/walls), Enguarde the swordfish (underwater-only stages), Winky the frog (defeats enemies by jumping on them), Expresso the ostrich (fast dashing and gliding), and Squawks the parrot (non-rideable; provides light in dark cave stages).
Progression / Required Objectives
Standard completion requires clearing each world's levels in sequence to reach and defeat that world's boss, ultimately reaching Gang-Plank Galleon to fight King K. Rool. Full ("101%") completion additionally requires collecting the hidden K-O-N-G letters in each level and finding bonus rooms/areas, which are optional for beating the game but tracked as a completion metric.
Bosses
Very Gnawty (Kongo Jungle), Master Necky (Monkey Mines), Queen B. (Vine Valley), Really Gnawty (Gorilla Glacier), Dumb Drum (Kremkroc Industries, Inc.), Master Necky Snr. (Chimp Caverns), and King K. Rool (Gang-Plank Galleon, final boss). King K. Rool is the main antagonist; he steals the Kongs' banana hoard with the help of his Kremling army, and the final battle against him takes place aboard his pirate ship, the Gang-Plank Galleon. This is the only Donkey Kong Country game on the SNES in which K. Rool is fought only once (no second/disguised form), unlike the sequels.
Completion Path
- Clear the levels of Kongo Jungle, Monkey Mines, Vine Valley, Gorilla Glacier, Kremkroc Industries Inc., and Chimp Caverns in order, defeating that world's boss to unlock the next.
- Reach Gang-Plank Galleon and defeat King K. Rool to complete the main game.
- Because animal buddies are tied to specific level types (Enguarde to underwater levels, Expresso to open dash levels, etc.), a natural per-level strategy is to keep whichever Kong/buddy combination suits that level's terrain rather than forcing one preferred Kong through every stage.
Still confirming
- Exact letter/bonus-room counts per level and precise 101% completion requirements were not independently itemized in this research pass beyond confirming that K-O-N-G letters and bonus areas are the tracked completion metrics.
