FATAL FURY 2
Fatal Fury 2 originated as an SNK Neo Geo arcade fighting game and was ported to the SNES by Takara. The SNES port, judged on its own terms, "plays reasonably well," though fans of the era generally considered console ports (including this SNES version) inferior to the arcade original due to compromised game physics and graphics compared to arcade hardware; the X68000 computer port was considered the closest to arcade-perfect among home versions.

This is a systems/mechanics guide rather than a linear walkthrough — a fixed step-by-step route isn't the useful format for a versus-fighter title.
Controls
The standard SNES button layout maps: Y to weak punch, X to hard punch, B to weak kick, A to hard kick, with L used for a "plain attack" and R to change plane. The D-pad handles movement, with up to jump, down to crouch, forward to advance, and down-back to perform a crouching block. Basic universal moves include crawling (achieved by holding down-forward), a backward dash (executed with back, back), high or low blocking, close-range throws (executed with forward or back plus hard punch when adjacent to the opponent), and a taunt.
Rules and Systems — Two-Plane Fighting
Fatal Fury 2 retains the series' signature two-plane fighting system, in which the stage has a foreground and background plane. A player can switch planes at any time by pressing the A and B buttons simultaneously. Unlike the original *Fatal Fury*, plane-switching in Fatal Fury 2 primarily functions as an evasive maneuver, letting a player dodge an incoming attack by moving to the opposite plane. The system is designed to prevent stalling: when the two fighters occupy opposite planes, standard attacks become unavailable until one player switches back, forcing engagement to resume on a shared plane.
Roster and Bosses
Fatal Fury 2 has eight playable characters: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi (returning from the original *Fatal Fury*), plus five new fighters — Cheng Sinzan, Jubei Yamada, Big Bear, Mai Shiranui, and Kim Kaphwan. Four non-playable boss characters appear at the end of the arcade ladder: Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, Laurence (Lawrence) Blood, and Wolfgang Krauser, the final boss.
Special Moves
Each character has their own unique set of special moves, generally executed via quarter-circle or "dragon punch" style motion inputs combined with a punch or kick button press, consistent with standard genre conventions of the era.
Practical Strategy
Because plane-switching functions as an evasive option that also suspends attacks until players share a plane again, using a plane-switch defensively right before a read/anticipated special move, then switching back to punish the recovery, is the core strategic use of the two-plane system implied by its described design. Given crouching blocks are specifically noted for low attacks, mixing high and low block inputs in response to an opponent's known move set is a reasonable general defensive approach consistent with the stated blocking controls.
Still confirming
- Frame data, exact special-move input notation per character, and matchup-specific strategy were not itemized in the sources reviewed at this research depth.
- Whether the SNES version omits any Neo Geo arcade content (stages, animations) beyond general graphical/physics compromises noted was not itemized in detail.
- Ending/story content per character was not confirmed.
