Kirby Super Star
Kirby Super Star is a platformer developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the SNES, released in Japan on March 21, 1996, North America on September 20, 1996, and Europe (PAL) on January 23, 1997. It was directed by Masahiro Sakurai and produced by Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto. Rather than a single continuous adventure, the game is structured as a compilation of distinct games/modes with their own scenarios, theming, and gameplay elements. The game sold 1.44 million copies, making it one of the best-selling SNES titles, and received generally favorable reviews (85.74% on GameRankings), with critics praising its content variety, cooperative gameplay, graphics, and power-absorption mechanics; it has been listed among the best SNES games by outlets including IGN, GamesRadar, and Complex.

Controls
Kirby can walk, run, jump, swim, crouch, slide, and inhale enemies to absorb their abilities. Kirby can fly temporarily by inflating himself, but cannot attack while airborne in this form. This installment introduced a dedicated guard (block) ability, and greatly expanded each Copy Ability's moveset with multiple distinct attacks per ability, including some light combo strings, similar in structure to a fighting game's move list.
Modes ("Games") and Structure
The compilation contains six primary games plus one extra game, supplemented by two Sub-Games, for a total set commonly described across sources as eight or nine discrete pieces of content: Spring Breeze, an abridged, beginner-oriented remake of the original Kirby's Dream Land; Dyna Blade, a four-level mode in which Kirby stops a giant bird disturbing local crops; Gourmet Race, a racing mode against King Dedede centered on collecting food items along the track; The Great Cave Offensive, a Metroidvania-style exploration mode containing 60 hidden treasures spread across four areas; Revenge of Meta Knight, a story-driven, time-limited mode culminating in the destruction of Meta Knight's airship; Milky Way Wishes, the largest mode, spanning nine planets and centered on repairing the Nova comet/clock; and The Arena, an extra boss-rush mode in which the player fights every boss in sequence with a limited life pool. Two additional minigame Sub-Games round out the package: Samurai Kirby, a quick-reflex button-timing minigame, and Megaton Punch, a minigame built around timed button-sequence inputs.
Copy Ability and Helper Systems
Kirby gains Copy Abilities by inhaling and swallowing specific enemies, with each absorbed ability changing Kirby's appearance to reflect it. In Milky Way Wishes specifically, Kirby instead collects permanent power-ups called "Copy Essence Deluxes" rather than absorbing abilities directly from enemies, giving that mode a different ability-acquisition system from the rest of the game. When holding a Copy Ability, Kirby can spit it out to create a Helper — an AI-controlled companion (or a second player's character, in cooperative play) that uses the same ability independently. Helpers can fly continuously but cannot perform certain other actions available to Kirby himself. Players can swap Kirby's current ability, or convert an active Helper back into a usable power-up item, as a mid-level flexibility/emergency option.
Practical Strategy
Because Helpers grant a second, independently-acting fighter using the same Copy Ability, using cooperative play to assign a Helper an ability well-suited to crowd control (freeing the main Kirby to focus on a boss or hazard) is a natural strategic use of the system, consistent with how Helpers are described. Since Milky Way Wishes uses a different, permanent ability-acquisition system (Copy Essence Deluxes) rather than per-enemy absorption, that mode likely rewards experimenting with every collected ability at leisure rather than committing early, though no dedicated Milky Way Wishes strategy guide was consulted to confirm an optimal ability-collection order.
Still confirming
- Full list of every individually named Copy Ability and its complete per-ability moveset was not itemized in this research pass.
- Exact treasure locations and requirements for all 60 hidden treasures in The Great Cave Offensive were not researched at this pass's depth.
- Precise time limits and stage-by-stage structure for Revenge of Meta Knight were not confirmed in detail.
