NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION
Nobunaga's Ambition is a grand strategy game developed and published by Koei, set during Japan's Warring States (Sengoku) period. It released on SNES in Japan on August 5, 1993, and in North America in December 1993. The player's objective is to unify Japan, playing as Oda Nobunaga or as one of the other available daimyo (feudal lords) present in the game.

This is a systems/mechanics guide rather than a linear walkthrough — a fixed step-by-step route isn't the useful format for a tactics title.
Controls / Starting Systems
As the ruler of a fief, the player chooses their own path toward conquest — options include waging war on neighboring fiefs, pursuing diplomacy, applying economic sanctions, or sending ninja assassins against rivals. The player must allocate resources to build a capable military force, sustain a productive economy supporting both military and civilian expansion, and maintain peasant respect/loyalty.
Progression Architecture
The player may choose from four campaign scenarios with different starting years and conditions: "Battle for the East" (beginning 1560), "Daimyo Power Struggles" (1560), "Ambition Untamed" (1571), and "Road Towards Unification" (1582). Gameplay proceeds in turns: each turn on the strategic map represents a season, while each turn during a battle represents a day.
Required Objectives / Victory Conditions
Victory in individual battles can be achieved multiple ways: forcing the enemy to retreat, destroying the enemy's command unit, or prolonging the battle until the opposing force exhausts its supplies. Because four scenarios exist with different starting years/conditions and the overall objective is unifying Japan under the player's chosen daimyo, "completion" of the game is scenario-dependent — a Phase 1 guide should treat each scenario as its own campaign-length win condition rather than assuming one universal endpoint.
Major Bosses
Not applicable in the traditional sense — the game does not have scripted "bosses"; opposition consists of rival daimyo and their armies, encountered as the player expands territory across the chosen scenario's map.
Completion Path
The general completion path is: select a scenario and starting daimyo → build economic and military capacity in your home fief → expand through war, diplomacy, or covert means against neighboring daimyo → continue defeating or absorbing rival territories until all of (or a scenario-defined portion of) Japan is unified under the player. The exact win condition thresholds (e.g., number of provinces or specific rival defeats required) per scenario were not confirmed from the sources accessed this pass.
Still confirming
- Detailed turn-by-turn mechanics (specific economic formulas, diplomacy options, ninja/assassination mechanics) were not verified beyond the high-level descriptions found.
- Exact differences in starting conditions/map size across the four scenarios were not itemized.
- Whether the SNES version differs mechanically from other platform releases of this Koei title was not confirmed; English-language coverage specific to the SNES release is thin, consistent with this being a niche, Japan-centric strategy title.
