PARTIAL SNES flight-combat

Star Fox 2

Star Fox 2 was completed in 1995 as the SNES sequel to Star Fox but was cancelled prior to release due to the rise of 3D-capable consoles (the Nintendo 64 was imminent). It was officially released for the first time on September 29, 2017, as part of the Super NES Classic Edition (SNES Classic Mini). Andross has returned to attack the Lylat system, launching planetary invasions and missile barrages; the Star Fox team must defend the home planet Corneria and its neighbors.

This guide documents the game's main progression and structure; some specific details are still being verified and are noted where relevant.

Controls

Unlike the original Star Fox's fixed rail-shooter levels, Star Fox 2 lets the player freely transform the Arwing between a flying configuration and a land-based walker configuration during planetary missions, allowing different movement and combat options depending on terrain. Strafing is done with Left/Right on the D-pad, while turning uses the L and R shoulder buttons; a charge laser is available in both the flight and walker forms.

Modes / Route Structure

Rather than following linear, mission-select levels, the player moves a team of ships freely around a real-time overworld map of the Lylat system. The map runs continuously, including during missions — enemy ships and missiles spawn and advance toward Corneria, and if they get past the player's ships and the planet's defenses, Corneria takes damage. This gives the game a tower-defense-like strategic layer on top of its action stages. Six playable pilots are selectable, each with a distinct Arwing variant and a unique special ability: Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and two new characters introduced in this game, Miyu and Fay. Star Wolf — Wolf O'Donnell (leader), Leon Powalski, Pigma Dengar, and Andrew Oikonny — serve as a recurring rival team encountered repeatedly throughout the game, alongside boss enemies, planetary bases, and Andross himself as the final antagonist. Missions vary in form: standard dogfights against enemy ships, trench-run sequences inside enemy battle cruisers, and planetary surface operations that require the walker transformation and involve platforming-style movement.

Progression / Required Objectives

Because the overworld map advances in real time and threats converge on Corneria regardless of what the player is doing, success requires balancing proactive offensive missions (destroying threats at their source) against reactive defense of Corneria, rather than clearing content in a fixed, level-by-level order as in the original Star Fox.
