SUPER E.D.F. EARTH DEFENSE FORCE
Super E.D.F.: Earth Defense Force is a 1992 side-scrolling shoot-'em-up developed and published by Jaleco, originally an arcade title later ported to SNES. The player pilots the XA-1 fighter ship against AGYMA's plot to destroy Earth and disrupt peace throughout the cosmos.

This guide documents the game's main progression and structure; some specific details are still being verified and are noted where relevant.
Controls
Holding the B button fires continuously (both the main ship gun and two attached gun turrets). The A button toggles the function/positioning of the two gun turrets. The X button changes the ship's movement speed, adjustable across three settings (one arrow = slowest, three arrows = fastest), in a style similar to the Thunder Force series' speed-select mechanic.
Weapons
The game provides a total of 8 weapons to customize the ship's firepower. The two attached satellite/turret guns can be directly controlled by the player, adding a tactical element beyond simply firing forward.
Levels / Structure
The SNES port has 6 levels total. Compared to the original arcade version, Stages 3 and 5 were removed; two new stages (the SNES version's Stage 4 and Stage 5) replace them, both set in space — one depicting a colony under attack, the other a journey toward and eventual landing on the Moon.
Survivability
Unlike many contemporary shmups, the player's ship can survive being hit more than once before dying — a notable design departure for the era. The adjustable 3-level ship speed is cited as a major gameplay improvement, giving players more complete control over the XA-1 relative to fixed-speed shooters of the time.
Bosses
Specific boss names and per-stage attack patterns were not confirmed from the sources accessed in this pass.
Survival / Scoring Strategy
Because the ship can absorb multiple hits and the turrets can be toggled/aimed independently of the main ship, a viable general strategy is likely to use turret control to cover blind spots while using speed adjustment to dodge dense bullet patterns — a reasonable inference from the stated mechanics, though not confirmed by a dedicated strategy guide in this pass.
Still confirming
- Names of all 6 stages.
- Boss names and attack patterns for each stage.
- Full list of the 8 available weapons.
- Exact player health/hit-point count (only that it is "more than one hit" was confirmed).
