This guide documents the game's main progression and structure; some specific details are still being verified and are noted where relevant.
Controls
Arthur has a double-jump mechanic: he can leap, then jump again while airborne. Players cannot control momentum/direction during a single jump but can change direction via the double jump.
Weapons and Armor
Arthur starts with Steel Armor and a lance. Additional weapons — knives, hatchets, crossbows, daggers, and torches — can be picked up, but only one weapon type can be held at a time. The Golden Armor system (new to this game) grants the enchanted version of the currently held weapon, a Moon Shield (blocks one projectile, but only functions while standing still), and a charge-up magic attack that typically hits most of the screen.
Levels / Stages
The game contains eight levels called "Quests": The Dead Place, The Rotting Sea, Vermilion Horror, The Ghoul's Stomach, The Deep Chill, The Castle of the Emperor, Hallway of Ghouls, and The Throne Room. Five of the eight Quests are split into two sections.
Bosses
Each stage ends in a "Foul Guardian" boss that protects the gate to the next stage. Individual Foul Guardian boss names were not confirmed from the source accessed in this pass.
Progression / Required Objectives
The game requires two full playthroughs to see the true ending: the first playthrough is required to find the "Goddess's Bracelet," which is then needed to defeat Sardius for real on the second playthrough.
Trouble Spots
Because losing the currently held weapon/armor (reverting Arthur to underwear when hit twice, a mechanic carried over from the Ghouls'n Ghosts series) is a severe setback, and because the game additionally requires a mandatory second playthrough to finish, this is widely regarded as one of the hardest games of its era — though a granular list of specific level trouble spots was not independently compiled in this pass.
Still confirming
- Names of all eight "Foul Guardian" bosses.
- Full magic-spell list obtainable via the Golden Armor's charge attack.
- Precise armor-degradation mechanic (whether Arthur reverts directly to underwear on a single hit, as in prior series entries, or has an intermediate state) — not independently reconfirmed for this specific title in this pass.
