Warp Zones here can send you backward
Unlike Super Mario Bros. (1985), Lost Levels Warp Zones are not only shortcuts forward. Nintendo of America’s Super Mario All-Stars Player’s Guide says there are 11 Warp Zones, including a backwards Warp Zone in World 3-1 leading to World 1-1. Use a warp only when you want that destination. Some warps are traps.
How many, and why they differ
The All-Stars Player’s Guide: 11 Warp Zones, including the mysterious backwards Warp Zone in World 3-1 leading to World 1-1. That is the mechanic to remember. This page is not a brick-by-brick map of every pipe.

Some rooms skip ahead (the Player’s Guide diagrams include World 1-2 skips toward later early worlds, plus later-world pipes). Use them when you already know a world and want to move on. Using a forward warp is the usual way to miss World 9.
CONFIRMED existence — All-Stars Player’s Guide warp diagrams; World 9 interaction labeled on this pageReverse warp: World 3-1 → World 1-1
The All-Stars Player’s Guide explicitly names a backwards Warp Zone in World 3-1 leading to World 1-1. If you drop into that room expecting a skip ahead, you go back to the start. Treat reverse warps as traps unless you meant to return.
CONFIRMED — Super Mario All-Stars Player’s Guide: “backwards Warp Zone in World 3-1 leading to World 1-1”World 8 reverse destination: UNKNOWN here
Nintendo Power Volume 52 says there is a Warp Zone in World 8 that takes you back to World 3. Other established references name a different World 8 reverse destination. PixelQuest will not pick a winner. If you are on Nintendo Classics, do not trust a reverse-World-8 pipe without checking the in-game label.
SOURCE CONFLICT — Nintendo Power Vol. 52 (World 3) vs other references; destination left UNKNOWNWorld 9 lock
Nintendo Power Vol. 52 treated World 9 as a real, contest-worthy destination in The Lost Levels. The safe rule on this cluster: if you want World 9, do not use forward Warp Zones — finish Worlds 1–8 in order. Whether reverse warps also lock World 9 on Nintendo Classics is UNKNOWN in this pass. All-Stars save-file behavior is a remake caveat, not assumed here.
