Warp Zones skip worlds on purpose

A Warp Zone is a hidden pipe room that sends you to a later world. Nintendo documented these as intended shortcuts, not glitches. Use them when you already know a world and want to move on. Do not confuse them with Minus World.

Why it exists

The NES game is eight worlds of four areas each. Warp Zones let you skip earlier kingdoms. The Official Nintendo Player’s Guide and the Super Mario All-Stars Player’s Guide both treat World 1-2 as a skip to Worlds 2, 3, or 4.

World 1-2 (first Warp Zone)

This is the Warp Zone most players mean. It is past the underground exit pipe that would normally send you to the flagpole. Reach the ceiling run above that exit, keep going, and drop into the room labeled as a Warp Zone. Pipes there skip ahead to World 2, 3, or 4. The full 1-2 route is on the walkthrough.

World 4-2 (more Warp Zones)

World 4-2 has additional Warp Zone rooms. The Official Nintendo Player’s Guide describes a room that warps directly to World 5, and a separate ivy/beanstalk room reached from underground 4-2. The walkthrough covers the 4-2 route; this page stays on the intended skips.

When to use them

Use 1-2 if you only need later worlds. Use 4-2 if you already cleared early kingdoms and want World 5 or beyond. If you are learning the game, skip Warp Zones until you have seen a world’s enemies and timer once.

Version caveat

This page is for NES Super Mario Bros. as listed under Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics. Super Mario All-Stars (SNES) redraws the rooms but still documents the same 1-2 skip. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a different game on the same NES Classics app.

CONFIRMED — Nintendo NES Classics store lists SMB and Lost Levels separately

Not a Warp Zone: Minus World

Minus World is a leftover overflow from clipping through the 1-2 exit pipe on original NES hardware. It is not an intended world. PixelQuest does not publish a glitch method here. Whether Nintendo Classics reproduces that overflow is UNKNOWN in this pass.
