Super Mario Bros. 3 · walkthrough
World 8 — Dark Land
Tanks, ships, optional hand traps, airships, fortress, super tank, Bowser. Not World 8-only leftover language — this is the full Dark Land route. Previous and next stage links sit under each area.
World 8-Tanks
Autoscroll tanks. Reach Boom Boom at the end of the convoy.
How to progress
- Jump tank to tank. Cannons and Bullet Bills. Do not fall between treads.
- Boom Boom at the end, three stomps. Map continues.
- After the boss, the map lock or airship path opens. Do not expect an SMA4 e-Reader room behind the NES door.
Hazards that matter
- Autoscroll
- cannons
- Boom Boom
World 8-Battleships
Autoscroll ships. Boom Boom at the end.
How to progress
- Ships over lava/water. TMK notes you can swim under some hulls — optional, easy to die. The intended path is deck-to-deck.
- Pipe to Boom Boom. Three stomps.
- After the boss, the map lock or airship path opens. Do not expect an SMA4 e-Reader room behind the NES door.
Hazards that matter
- Autoscroll
- cannons
- lava
World 8-Hand Trap 1
Optional grab-hand stage. Super Leaf is the usual prize.
How to progress
- A map hand can pull you into a short action stage. Clear it to return. Prize is typically a Super Leaf, not a wand.
- You can avoid some hands by routing around them. If grabbed, play it.
- The goal card (or fortress/airship exit) is the clear. Card matching is a bonus, not a required unlock.
Hazards that matter
- Hammer Bros mix
World 8-Hand Trap 2
Second optional hand.
How to progress
- Same rule as Hand 1. Clear and return to Dark Land.
- Not required if you never get grabbed.
- The goal card (or fortress/airship exit) is the clear. Card matching is a bonus, not a required unlock.
Hazards that matter
- Enemies
World 8-Hand Trap 3
Third optional hand.
How to progress
- Same rule. Three hands exist on NES Dark Land.
- Leaf prize typical. UNKNOWN if every hand always drops the same item every run — treat the prize as a bonus, not a planned loadout.
- The goal card (or fortress/airship exit) is the clear. Card matching is a bonus, not a required unlock.
Hazards that matter
- Enemies
World 8-Airships
Autoscroll airship set. Boom Boom, not a Koopaling.
How to progress
- Dark Land airships. Cannons. Boom Boom three stomps.
- This is not Larry–Ludwig. Those wands are done. This is Bowser’s fleet.
- After the boss, the map lock or airship path opens. Do not expect an SMA4 e-Reader room behind the NES door.
Hazards that matter
- Cannons
- autoscroll
- Boom Boom
World 8-1
Reach the goal card. First numbered Dark Land stage.
How to progress
- Ground stage after the fleet. P-switch near the start can reveal coins — optional.

World 8-Fortress
Boom Boom. Opens Super Tank.
How to progress
- Dark Land fortress. Hotter, longer. Three stomps.
- Do not confuse with Bowser’s castle. Castle is after Super Tank.
- After the boss, the map lock or airship path opens. Do not expect an SMA4 e-Reader room behind the NES door.
Hazards that matter
- Lava
- Boom Boom
World 8-Super Tank
Last tank. Boom Boom. Opens Bowser’s castle.
How to progress
- Heavier tank autoscroll than Tank 1. Cannons, Bob-Ombs.
- Boom Boom three stomps. Castle unlocks.
- After the boss, the map lock or airship path opens. Do not expect an SMA4 e-Reader room behind the NES door.
Hazards that matter
- Autoscroll
- cannons

World 8-Bowser's Castle
Navigate the castle doors and hit Bowser until the floor breaks.
How to progress
- Door maze. Wrong doors loop. Standard NES hint: remember the statue/door pattern rather than guessing forever. PixelQuest is not printing a fake unique code that fails on some carts.
- Bowser throws hammers and fire. Stomp or wait for a jump and run under, then hit the switch / break the floor by making him land on the crumbling blocks — NES Bowser dies when he breaks through the floor, not from a World 1-style axe on a rope.
- Princess is here. That is the NES ending. Super Mario Advance 4 e-Reader and World-e are OUT OF SCOPE.
Hazards that matter
- Hammers
- lava
- door maze
- Bowser
Notes
- Do not mix All-Stars Bowser room cosmetics into this NES route.
