Super Mario Bros. 2 · walkthrough
World 4
Ice and whales. Fryguy is the world boss. A jar on a whale island skips to World 6. Previous and next stage links sit under each area.
World 4-1
Cross ice without sliding into pits, then beat Birdo.
How to progress
- Ice is slippery. Short hops beat long runs. Luigi’s extra jump distance also adds slide — Mario or Toad are easier here if the ice is beating you.
- Autobombs and ice Shyguys occupy the flats. Pick them up; do not charge.
- Potion still works on ice. Drop it on a wide platform so the door is usable.
- Birdo, crystal, Mask Gate.
Hazards that matter
- Ice physics
- pits
- Birdo
World 4-2
Ride the whales, optionally warp from the island jar, then beat Birdo.
How to progress
- Whales surface and submerge. Stand on the back, then hop before it dives. Water still kills.
- Optional warp: near the end of the whale stretch, a lone jar sits on an island under an ice platform. Carry a Potion from the high rocks, drop it by the jar, Sub-space, enter the jar. Destination: World 6.
- If you skip the warp, continue to Birdo.
- Birdo, crystal, Mask Gate.
Hazards that matter
- Diving whales
- ice
- Birdo
Notes
- The Potion must be carried across the whales. Dropping it in the water wastes it.
World 4-2 whale-island jar warp (Sub-space) — World 6.
World 4-3
Reach Fryguy and put him out with Mushroom Blocks.
How to progress
- Ice indoor rooms. Sparks and ice pits. Take the mushroom if Sub-space offers one before the boss.
- Fryguy is a fireball face. Throw Mushroom Blocks into him. When he splits into smaller flames, keep throwing until the room is clear.
- Do not stand under falling mini-flames. Blocks on the floor are ammo — pick them up rather than jumping past them.
- World 4 ends when Fryguy’s pieces are gone.
Hazards that matter
- Ice
- Fryguy fire
- split flames
Notes
- Exact split count can look different in remakes. This page describes NES Fryguy: hit the large form, then the smaller flames.
