Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels · walkthrough
World 8
The numbered game ends at 8-4. World 9 only if you did not warp. Letter worlds are a separate unlock. Previous and next stage links sit under each area.
World 8-1
Flagpole. Late-game overworld.
How to progress
- Long overworld. Hammer Bros if they appear. Poison still exists this late.
- Flagpole.
- Do not warp from here if you want World 9.
Hazards that matter
- Poison mushrooms
- pits
- Hammer Bros
World 8-2
Flagpole.
How to progress
- Second overworld gauntlet. Flagpole.
- Hidden blocks.
- Timer pressure.
Hazards that matter
- Pits
- timer
World 8-3
Athletic flagpole.
How to progress
- Athletic. Wind. Flagpole.
- This is the last easy-looking stage that is not easy.
- Luigi only if you need the width.
Hazards that matter
- Wind
- pits
World 8-4
Defeat Bowser and hit the axe. Princess. Then World 9 or the title screen, depending on warps and version.
How to progress
- Bowser’s castle. Maze halls like SMB 8-4, meaner. Wrong pipe loops the castle. Count pipes; do not invent a map from memory of SMB 8-4 — the rooms differ.
- Real Bowser at the axe. Fire or stomp-and-axe. Princess, not Toad.
- If you used no Warp Zones: World 9 can unlock. If you warped: title / ending without 9. Worlds A–D are a different unlock (see World A notes). All-Stars may continue into A automatically — that sequential flow is All-Stars, not assumed for Nintendo Classics.
Hazards that matter
- Castle maze
- lava
- Bowser
Notes
- World 9 unlock: clear all 32 numbered stages without Warp Zones. NSO Rewind is app chrome, not a 1986 continue.
