Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels · walkthrough
World 9 — Fantasy World
Secret world after a no-warp 8-4. Mostly underwater. Original-style copies loop; All-Stars may continue to A. Previous and next stage links sit under each area.
World 9-1
Reach the flagpole. Underwater 9-1.
How to progress
- Unlock: defeat 8-4 without using Warp Zones. You may have one life for the set on original-style copies — PixelQuest has not independently counted starting lives on the current Nintendo Classics listing. UNKNOWN lives count on NSO.
- 9-1 starts with a staircase into an underwater pipe. Swim. Flagpole can appear underwater. That is the joke of Fantasy World.
- Do not treat this as SMB water. Layouts are unique.
Hazards that matter
- Underwater flagpole
- Piranha Plants
Notes
- See hub Secrets page for World 9 caveats.
World 9-2
Swim the pipe maze. Flagpole.
How to progress
- 9-2: pipe maze underwater, Lakitu can appear above/through the gimmick. Keep swimming; there is little floor.
- Flagpole.
- A death here may end the World 9 attempt on original-style one-life rules. UNKNOWN on NSO.
Hazards that matter
- Pipe maze
- little floor
- Lakitu
World 9-3
Castle-colored 9-3. Flagpole / axe equivalent as laid out.
How to progress
- 9-3 uses castle visuals but is not World 8-4. Platforming, not a Bowser maze.
- Clear to 9-4.
- All-Stars continues toward letter worlds after 9 in some flows. Do not assume that on Nintendo Classics.
Hazards that matter
- Castle terrain
- pits
World 9-4
Flagpole. Original-style: the world can loop to 9-1 until a Game Over.
How to progress
- 9-4 underwater. Flagpole.
- Original FDS-style: completing 9-4 can loop World 9. All-Stars: may proceed to World A. Deluxe: letter worlds omitted entirely.
- Nintendo Classics behavior of the loop vs continue is UNKNOWN if it was not independently verified on the live listing. Play it and note what the app does; PixelQuest is not inventing the branch.
Hazards that matter
- Underwater
- loop / version ending
